LEVEL 5 -- INSTRUCTIONAL LESSON No. 1

A paragraph is a group of sentences that are all about one main idea or topic. The main idea is the most important idea in the paragraph. Most paragraphs contain a topic sentence that states the main idea. All the other sentences in the paragraph will tell more about the main idea.

Read the following paragraph about the scales on a fish.

-------------

Most fish are covered by scales. Their scales form the outer protection for the fish. The scales overlap one another like tiles on a roof. This helps the fish move smoothly through the water.

The main idea of the paragraph you just read was stated in the first sentence, which reads, "Most fish are covered by scales." All the other sentences tell more about the scales of a fish. These sentences are known as supporting details.

Now read the following paragraph, and be ready to answer some questions about the main idea of the paragraph and the supporting details.

-------------------

There are many different kinds of sneakers. Some have flat soles that are needed for playing sports like tennis or basketball. Other sneakers have rounded toes and heels for running or jogging. If you like boating, you may want a sneaker with a canvas top. There are a lot of different kinds of sneakers because there are many different uses for them.

Answer the following questions by choosing the letter for the best answer. Each correct answer is worth 10 points.

-----------------

1. The main idea of the paragraph is

(A) some sneakers have flat soles.

(B) there are many different kinds of sneakers.

(C) boating sneakers have canvas tops.

Answers A and C are supporting details. They help explain the main idea, which is answer B, "There are many different kinds of sneakers."

2. Which of the following would not be a detail about the kinds of sneakers?

(A) Some sneakers have flat soles.

(B) Some sneakers are good for jogging.

(C) Some shoes look like sneakers.

(D) Some sneakers have canvas tops.

The paragraph explains that this is one kind of sneaker. The answer that is not about kinds of sneakers is C "Some shoes look like sneakers." This sentence instead tells about a kind of shoe.

3. Which of the following could be added to a paragraph about kinds of sneakers?

(A) Some sneakers are sold in many stores.

(B) Some people wear sneakers instead of shoes.

(C) Some sneakers reflect light for night jogging.

Answers A and B do not tell about a kind of sneaker, which is the paragraph topic. The correct answer is C, "Some sneakers reflect light for night jogging."

Sometimes the main idea of a paragraph or story is not directly stated in one sentence. However, the reader can still decide what the paragraph is mainly about. Read the following paragraph to find its main idea.

--------------

Much damage can be caused by floods. Dams have been built across some streams to help control flooding. Sometimes trees and grass are planted in hilly areas to catch rainwater that would run off into a flooding stream. Dikes are sometimes built along the banks of a river to prevent floods.

4. Although not stated in one sentence, the main idea of this paragraph would be that

(A) there are a number of ways to prevent floods.

(B) dams help prevent floods.

(C) flooding streams can be dangerous.

Answer B is a supporting detail that helps explain one way to prevent floods. The correct answer is A, "There are a number of ways to prevent floods." Answere C may be true but it is not supported by the other sentences in he paragraph. All the sentences in this paragraph help to tell about answer A, "There are a number of ways to prevent floods."

Read the story and be ready to answer some questions about it.

---------------------

Did you ever look up at the moon and see a face? Some people call this face "the man in the moon." The surface of the moon is very rough. The darker parts that you see are rocklike material that do not reflect much light. Other areas of the moon are covered by powdery dust that reflects much more light. The light and dark areas make a picture of a face from our viewpoint on Earth.

There are many great craters on the moon that cause much of the rough surface. Some scientists believe the craters were made by meteors or other giant materials crashing into the moon. Other scientists believe the craters were made by volcanic explosions inside the moon. No one knows the real cause.

The moon's craters have walls as high as our mountains on Earth. Some are only about 100 feet wide, but there are other giant craters about 100 miles wide. If you have your own telescope or field glasses, you can see some of the larger craters through them.

Answer the following questions about the story by choosing the letter that marks the one best answer. Each correct answer is worth 10 points.

--------------------------

1. In the story, the word reflect means

(A) to cover up with marks.

(B) to blow up.

(C) to throw back light.

2. The craters on the moon are

(A) large holes.

(B) large rocks.

(C) tall mountains.

3. This story is mainly about

(A) giant meteors.

(B) the rough surface of the moon.

(C) the size of the moon.

Meteors were only named once as a possible cause for craters. The size of the moon was not told in the story.

4. Some scientists believe that the moon's craters were formed by

(A) powdery dust.

(B) volcanic explosions.

(C) rockets to the moon.

The story said that areas of the moon are covered with powdery dust, but craters were not formed from it. The story did not say anything about rockets.

5. Much of the moon's rough surface is caused by

(A) powdery dust.

(B) many large craters.

(C) walls of ice.

The story said areas covered by powdery dust reflect a lot of light. Rough surfaces reflect less light. Therefore the dust has nothing to do with rough surfaces. The story did not say anything about walls of ice.

6. Even though it was not directly stated, the story lets us know that

(A) the moon is a long distance from Earth.

(B) there are many people on the moon.

(C) the moon is usually dark all year.

The story says that the moon's large craters can only be seen with a telescope. This helps us know that answer A is correct.
